Saturday Market #16: The Most Beautiful Day of the Year

How do you tell the story of the Most Beautiful Day of the Year and do it any justice? It was so complicated getting there, and so wonderful being there... Luckily I've got photos and video to help.

There were Adventures in the scheduling side of things during the week that made for some anxious moments, but ultimately made for a great line-up. Not one, but two cancellations during the week (one was Friday morning) left me with a new end-of-the-day band and then a last minute mid-day set alteration. Not that it wasn't a pretty great line-up to start with, but some cosmic fine-tuning really polished it up nicely and brought around an incredible flow of music and energy across the stage.

Saturday Market 07 19 06

I always completely look forward to and love Truckstop Honeymoon - Mike West and Katy Euliss. I'm sure I've raved about them annually. This year they had a special treat in store, Jake Wagner who used to play mandolin with The Mad Farmers waaay back in the day was in town, and knows them from Lawrence Kansas where they are all living. So he got to sit in with them.

Saturday Market 07 19 09

That was great. I also had the priviledge of "wearing" Mike and Katy's one year old son during the set, so I got to multitask, running sound, taking photos, baby sitting. Fun! (since it's been 18 years since I had to schlep a baby regularly)

Saturday Market 07 19 07

So then next up was my last minute recruit Peter Wilde, I've already raved about him this year. He had Jake and Mike from T.H. sit in with him. 'Twas Peter that proclaimed it "The Most Beautiful Day of the Year" and he was right. The weather was absolutely awesome, 80 degrees, blue skies, light breeze, aaah. Another amazing set and this time I got video, which I HAVE GOT to get YouTubed this weekend. I'll embed a clip when I have it uploaded. And so that was amazing as well, and then Peter had Laura Kemp sing with him on the last song of the set. The saddest song ever, probably, and it was delicious.

Then Laura played her set and it was beautiful too of course and as always. And meanwhile as all this amazing flow of talent was intertwining and bursting forth, all kinds of people were coming up and telling me their Market moments, like the woman who had just come to town to visit from Kansas and found her sister's next door neighbors, Mike and Katy, playing on the stage. And the guy who posted those 1992 video clips of Market on YouTube who doesn't even live here anymore, but was glad to visit and find things not much altered since then.

And I've completely forgotten to mention the puppet show earlier in the day starring our old friend Monster, telling the story of how stars are born (not Hollywood stars, but real starry stars...).

Saturday Market 07 19 01

And Paul Naylor having his first Market Stage set first thing in the morning and wowing and confusing folks with his little chorus pedal that made it sound like there were four folks on stage singing. And Uncle Stumbles wrapping it all up with some sweet Dead-inspired jams.

I hardly got away from the stage at all, but why would I leave? It had somehow turned into a Real Live Big Time Music Festival line-up and I had a backstage pass! Reports from all over the Market at the end of the day confirmed that it was Most Beautiful elsewhere as well, there were visitors from all over the planet, and many Marketeers had great sales days and left the Park Blocks happy. Now what will tomorrow bring? We shall see...

Saturday Market #15: Oh So Mellow is Fair Saturday

This is Papa Soul. He took some time away from running Papa's Soul Food Kitchen to come and play with Al Rivers. That expression on his face? That is what Country Fair Saturday is like at the Market. Happy, relaxed, with a touch of blissful. It really is one of the nicest Markets of the whole season. And he and Al sounded just like that looks...

That really sums up the whole day. 'Nuf said, and on to another great Market tomorrow morning!

Saturday Market #14: Something for Everyone!

Some days the stage is just a crazy quilt of styles and people, and this was one of those days. I love when that happens, nobody knows what to expect next, and there's plenty of audio delight to go around!

We started the day out with a delightful set of Celtic tunes from harpist Janet Naylor, followed by the kids' set from Rich Glauber who sang lots of oldies like "Side By Side" and "You Make Me Feel So Young" with his friend Tom, and then one of our Old SLUG Queens Scarlett O'Slimera joined him for some more kid favorites.

Next up, for the first time at Market, Howard Steele from Monroe:

Saturday Market 07 05 04

As you might guess from the Stetson hat, Howard sang real country tunes filled with cowboys and railroads and lots of yodeling, really beautiful expert yodeling. Everybody loved him!

After Howard, Jonny Hahn from Seattle:

Saturday Market 07 05 11

Jonny is a fixture on the streets of the Pike Street Market in Seattle and on the path at the Country Fair, and the week before Fair at Market. He generally plays beautiful ethereal wordless piano tunes, but given a microphone, he's got plenty of opinions to share in clever rhymes and twinkling piano, taking on everything from Starbucks to the current administration and beyond. He makes some folks uncomfortable, but this is Eugene! Opinion is a Eugenean birthright, and we do political all over the place, so what's not to love?

Not feeling political? How about some tangos and other latin inspired tunes from the Craig Einhorn Trio, plus a killer reggae version of Greensleeves (soon to be posted on YouTube).

Saturday Market 07 05 13

And were travelling the globe not enough, how about some time travel as well? The Gaye Lee Russell Band was so much fun, as Gaye Lee channelled Janis Joplin in tribute. An excellent end to a fun day.

Saturday Market 07 05 16

This week the Oregon Country Fair is on, but we'll still be at Market. I'll pop out there tomorrow and have a fun Fair day, then come back in for a fun Market day. More on that after it occurs!

Saturday Market #13: Lucky 13? Depends on Your Definition of Lucky...

Lucky: The Traceys are back! They were a Eugene fixture when I started in the early 90s and rightly so. Superb tight harmonies, delicious choices in repertoire, great arrangements, wonderful energy, goosebumply to watch. Then typical life-type stuff happened and they took a break, which was sad - for me anyway. Then this spring Annie Tracey called and asked for a Traceys gig. Hooooray I said and signed them up. Here they are singing a new one, "One More Day." Worth a listen for sure!

Not so lucky: The weather was too hot! Nothing slows down an outdoor event in Eugene Oregon faster than the thermometer topping 86 degrees. Not even raining and 45 degrees stops people as fast. Sounds wimpy, I know, but it's true. It was 86 degrees before noon. Hence a sloooow Market day. No doubt the Track Trials pulled folks away as well. Here's hoping they'll be bored and looking for some fun, and willing to venture forth in the 81 predicted degrees. Here's an atypically leisurely food court at lunchtime...

Saturday Market 06 28 23

Now, on to Luckier 14! See you there...
